'Police warn of 2012 Olympics cyber-threat'

Jul 10, 2009 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) -- Scotland Yard has warned that international groups of cyber-criminals are preparing to target the 2012 London Olympics, writes The Guardian.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Janet Williams announced an investigation into a series of front companies that could be used for online frauds.

Speaking at the Association of Chief Police Officers annual conference in Manchester, she said criminals could be preparing complicated electronic attacks on ticketing, sponsorship deals and transport infrastructure. She said a specialist team had been set up by London's Metropolitan Police to examine the threat of internet and electronic attacks on the 2012 Olympics. She told the conference that 3 million online crimes take place in the UK each year, equal to around one crime every 10 seconds.
